1 〔立脚点〕 a place to stand; a footing; 〔地位〕 a position; a stand; 〔役割〕 a role; 〔境遇〕 a situation.

●危険な立場 a dangerous position [situation]

・公的な立場 《in》 an official capacity [role]

・責任ある立場 a position of responsibility

・それが責任ある立場の人間のいうことですか. Is that the sort of thing a person in a position of responsibility would say?

・嫁の立場 the position [role] of a daughter-in-law

・政治的立場 a political stand

・反政府的立場にある指導者たち leaders who hold antigovernment positions.

●立場がはっきりしない 《sb whose》 position isn't clear [is ill-defined]

・彼女と私とでは立場が違う[異なる]. Her position and mine are different [differ].

・自分の立場がわかってきた. I began to see where I stood.

・彼は自分の立場がわかっていない. He does not know where he stands.

・立場が逆転した. The tables have been turned. | The roles [positions] have been reversed.

・もし君と彼の立場が逆だとしたらどうする? What (would you do,) if your position and his were reversed?

●強い立場で交渉に臨む come to a negotiation from a position of strength

・市長の立場で出席します. I will attend in my capacity as mayor.

・みながそれぞれの立場でものを言うと収拾がつかなくなる. There's no resolving things when everyone insists on their own point of view.

●不利な立場にある be in a disadvantageous position; be at a disadvantage; 《米》 《俗》 be behind the eight ball

・それでは私が困った立場になる. That would put me in a difficult position.

3 〔見地･観点〕 a point of view; a viewpoint; a standpoint; a perspective.

●理想主義的立場からの意見 an opinion from an idealistic point of view.

●心理学の立場からそれを説明する explain it from the point of view of psychology

・親の立場から言わせてもらえば if I may speak from a parent's standpoint

・第三者の立場から見てどう思いますか. What do you think of it from your perspective as a third party?

・彼はそれについて異なった立場から論じているのだ. He discusses it from a different angle [point of view].

・独自の立場から発言する speak from a personal point of view.

●…という立場を取る take the standpoint that…

・中間の立場を取る adopt a middle standpoint 《between…》
